The seated, bound Christ is surrounded by a throng of henchmen, who torment and mock him in a variety of ways. Men in armour pull faces and blind him with a lantern. One of the henchmen places a jesters hat on his head from behind, another puts his horn over Christ's ear. The scene takes place inside and the space is defined by a red marble column and a rose window.

Underdrawing

- underdrawing with a brush and a black fluid medium, defines contures and the main features within the forms; with reference to the prototype in the Schlossmuseum in Weimar; some corrections during the painting process e.g. the head of the figure in the background on the right edge.

Paint Layers and Gilding

- grey underpaint with a striking pink flesh tone that does not correspond with the workshop practice of Lucas Cranach
