CDA ID/Inventory No: DE_smbGG_544A

Object No: FR 079

Cross-section No.: EP 139

Brief description of paint: blue-grey from the Virgin's robe

Sample location: blue-grey from the Virgin's robe

Sample No.: 198

Observations:

4. varnish (3 layers, the bottom layer is possibly original?)

3. blue layer with white, azurite and brown glassy (fluoresces orange red under UV-light) pigment particles, modeling with white, blue and a (discoloured ?) red lake

2. grey layer with white, black plintered pigments (and two little red lead inclusions), underdrawing

1. thin interlayer, slightly more intense fluorescence (imprimitura not visible), single black pigments, underdrawing?

0. white layer, ground

Comments: the modeling was acheived employing azurite, white and brownish red lake pigments applied over a grey layer of underpaint

Brief description of paint: lining of the green mantle

Sample location: lining of the green mantle

Sample No.: 200

Observations:

5. brown transparent layer, intense fluorescence under UV-light, varnish

4. brown transparent layer, intense fluorescence under UV-light, varnish

3. green layer like 2, but slightly intense and transparent, no fluorescence under UV-llight

2. green layer with bluish-green (verdigris?), white and yellow (?) pigments

1. single black particles, underdrawing without an imprimitura

0. white layer, ground

Comments: green paint application in two layers

Brief description of paint: dark blue background

Sample location: dark blue background

Sample No.: 199

Observations:

3. remnants of varnish

2. blue layer with white and blue, coarsely ground pigments (blues of varying intensity; the space between the particles fluoresces under UV-light), blue background

1. black layer containing small black and glassy white (?) inclusions, pigments or binding medium inclusions (these are yellow under UV-light), underdrawing

0. white layer, ground

Comments: dark blue over a black underdrawing
