Research History / Discussion

Christian II stayed in Cranachs house 1523-24, in a period when he was in exile. Several portraits by Cranach are known, both graphic and oils. Of the latter two are known beside this: one in Nuremberg and one in Leipzig. The Sønderborg portrait is very similar to the Leipzig painting.
