Christ's corpse is depicted at the centre of the image resting on a white cloth and supported by St John. The Virgin embraces her dead son and Mary Magdalene kisses the wound on his right hand. Christ's left hand is held by one of the women in mourning. The scene is completed by two other women as well as Nikodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Behind them the two thieves still hang on their crosses and in the background there is a hilly landscape. Sts Wolfgang and Helen stand with their respective attributes on the left and right in the foreground. The donor family kneels between them.
