Research History / Discussion

Oak wood was rarely used in the Cranach workshop. The carefully smoothed surface on the reverse and the straight edges do not correspond with the usual finish for panels in the Cranach workshop. The profile of the frame, which is original, has not been found on any other painting from the Cranach workshop

Between 1530-50 the workshop produced numerous paintings that do not show any trace of underdrawing in infrared reflectograms.

The technique of paint application and the gilding do not correspond with the usual practice in the Cranach workshop.

We do not consider this painting to be a work by the Cranach workshop. Some sections exhibit similarities with works by Antonius Heusler.

The date on the frame ‚1549‘ and the information concerning the age of the sitter confirm his presumed identity. Count Wolfgang of Stolberg was born in 1501 and is depicted in this painting at the age of 48.

Technical studies

22.02.2016Technical examination / Scientific analysis

  • Infrared reflectography
  • X-radiography
  • UV-light photograph
  • Other imaging techniques
  • Stereomicroscopy

Support

The following examination methods were employed:

Stereomicroscopy, Infrared reflectography (Osiris, 900-1700nm), UV- light examination, X-radiography (Seifert ERESCO 150KV/0,5mA / Examion CR 3X-pro), XRF-analysis

The wooden panel consists of three planksand appears to be oak (the wood was not examined under the stereomicroscope). the reverse of the panel has been smooth with great care, saw marks are only visible at the bottom edge of the central plank. The join have been covered on the reverse with strips of cloth.

Ground and Imprimatura

A white ground was applied to the front of the panel.

Underdrawing

An underdrawing was not visible in the infrared reflectogram

Paint Layers and Gilding

The results of the XRF-analysis have not yet been evaluated.

Framing

The panel is fixed in a rebate frame of coniferous wood. The painting was originally held in place with hand forged square nails (now replaced with wire nails). The original finish was reworked with gilding and black paint.

On the upper frame member the x-radiograph revealed the inscriptions: '1549' and 'AETATIS SUAE XXXX VIII'

Condition Reports

Date22.02.2016

The painting is in a visibly poor and reworked state. There is extensive overpaint covering in particular the areas of flesh paint, but also the fur, the background and the balustrade. Llarge areas of the painting exhibit prominant alligator cracks. The paint is flaking in the sky and there are new losses.
