The painting shows a half-length portrait of the princess against a neutral background, facing left. Her black embroidered dress is laced around the stomach and has a high stiff collar. She wears a pendant set with precious stones around her neck as well as a pearl necklace. Her neck is concealed by a white pleated blouse with a decoratively embroidered high collar and her hair is tucked under a pearl snood. The pearls on the snood reveal the 'H'. Her attire is completed with a black beret set at an angle and decorated with feathers.

Research History / Discussion

The portrait is similar to a number of other paintings attributed to the Cranach workshop from about the same period: a version in the Veste Coburg [DE_KSVC_M020], one in Schloss Friedenstein, Gotha [DE_SMG_SG12], two of slightly larger dimension, one in the Landesgalerie Burgenland, Eisenstadt [AT_LGB_129] and the other in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P441]. A further slightly later version now in the Museum Kurhaus Kleve [DE_MKK_FK-06-IX-Ia] is also worth mentioning within this context. However, the softer facial features are very close to a slightly earlier version without a feathered beret now in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen [DK_SMK_KMSsp726].
