Research History / Discussion

Although numerous versions of these double portraits are known to have been produced in the Cranach workshop between c. 1530 and 1540 the facial features in this painting most closely resemble those of a small format painting in the Lindenau-Museum, Altenburg [DE_LMA_356] and a small format version of a later date (albeit without pendant) in the Art Museum of Estonia, Tallinn [EE_AMET_VM683]. Also very similar in this respect are two slightly earlier large format versions (both without pendant), one in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P345] and the other - where the sitter is shown holding a sword - in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin [DE_smbGG_590].
