Research History / Discussion

Two further versions of this vertical composition are known: a version in Darmstadt [DE_HLMD_GK75] of about the same dimensions, dated ‘1533’ and a later, considerably larger copy now in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P183]. Unlike the present version both bear the inscription ‘FONTIS NYMPHA SACRI SOMNVM NE RVMPE QVIESCO.'
