Christ as Ecce Homo is shown frontally as a three-quarter length figure with his head inclined slightly to the left. Positioned at the centre of the composition he is flanked either side, on the left by Pontius Pilate, depicted as a bearded man in a turban and on the right by a soldier with a red cap, baring his teeth. Further men are lined up behind them, some with a portrait-like character. A green curtain serves as a backdrop to separate the figurative group from the architectural background visible at the left.

Condition Reports

Date1997

With the exception of Christ’s head the faces of the other figures exhibit numerous small to medium-sized paint losses. Particularly extensive damage is evident in the face of the man at the left edge of the painting (forehead, nose, chin), Pilate’s beard and collar, Christ’s chest and his left hand as well as the left side of the soldier beside him [...]

Frame: numerous large losses in the reddish-yellow faux marbling, particularly along the outside.

[Emmendörffer 1997, 122, 123].

Conservation History

Date1939

A text in Swedish from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 53, 4-5) was removed from the parapet as well as the original reference to the biblical source. Numerous losses were retouched.

[Emmendörffer 1997, 123]
