[1] August Fink (once curator of the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich Museum) says in 1959 (letter in museum files) that the picture appears in the Salzdahlum inventory of 1744 but not in the catalogues of 1710 or 1776, indicating that it was 'not a part of the picture gallery but was hung in the private rooms of the ducal family. And most probably it is not an acquisition of the period of duke Charles I (1735-80) but part of the stock of the collections of the 17th or even 16th century. In the last inventory of the collection (1789-1803) it is Nr. 237.'

60) Der heilige Hieronymus in seiner Zelle. Mit der Jahrzahl 1526. 4 Fuß hoch und 2 Fuß 9 Zoll 3 Linien breit.
Der Heilige, in Cardinaltracht, Portrait des Cardinals Albrecht von Mainz, sitzt in einem geräumigen Zimmer an einer weißen hölzernen Tafel von verschiedenen Thieren umgeben. Schönes Bild, doch nicht so ganz frisch und meisterhaft wie die vorzüglichsten Arbeiten Cranach's. Interessant ist es besonders deshalb, weil durch Perspective, Helldunkel des Zimmers und durch verständige Bertheilung der Localfarben ein hoher Grad von Haltung hervor gebracht ist, der eine Berechnung dahin voraussetzt. Die Thiere sind zierlich gemalt. Das Bild gleicht im Ganzen dem Gemälde mit demselben Gegenstande im darmstädter Museum.'

From Braunschweig im Jahre MDCCCXCVII., Städtische Festschrift veröffentlicht bei Gelegenheit der Versammlung Deutscher Naturforscher und Aerzte zu Braunschweig im Jahre 1897 (available as e-book):
'Sammlung Hollandt (Bruchthorpromenade 4) enthält ca. 75 Oelbilder älterer
deutscher, niederländischer und italienischer Meister. Besonders hervorzuheben ist ein Cyclus von sieben Bildern von Lucas Cranach, darstellend die Thaten des Herkules. Frau E. Hollandt.'

[3] In a publication of 1929 (Esther Singleton, Old World Masters in New World Collections), the author states that the picture 'came into possession of the present owner [John Ringling] from Baron Viehweg of Hanover, in whose family it had been since the time of Cranach.'

Also in exhibition catalogue of 1929 (Van Diemen Galleries, New York, Exhibition of Paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder) the provenance is given thus: 'Collection Baron Viehweg, Hanover - Lent by John Ringling, Esq.'
