  • DESCRIPTION

    Tools/Materials:
    - pointed brush, in details also with a quill (?); fluid black pigmented medium; the broader lines were drawn with a brush, the thinner lines with a small pointed brush or details with a quill (?)

    Type/Ductus:
    - detailed and freehand underdrawing
    - broad, sketchy lines are combined with some more delicate thinner lines

    Function:
    - only roughly binding for the final painted version; the broader lines delineate contours and indicate folds in the drapery; there is little representation of volume; the thinner lines are mainly visible in the face of the Virgin, the cherub on the edge of the well and the cherub in the sky

    Deviations:
    - there are numerous minor alterations in the painted version to clearly define form and some slightly more significant changes e.g.: the Virgin’s head, the position of the head of the cherub on the edge of the well and the loom
