The central panel of the triptych depicts the Crucifixion of Christ. The upper third of the picture is occupied by Christ and the horizontally wafting bands of his loin cloth. The crosses of the two thievess project diagonally into the pictorial space. The witnesses crowd around the base of the cross. In the bottom left corner there is a group with the Virgin and St John, and in the bottom right corner ruffians fight over Christ's robe. A group of men on horseback form the central band of figures from where numerous spears and lances rise and are silhouetted against the dramatic sky with red clouds.
