Christiane von Eulenau is depicted as a half-length figure turned slightly to the left. She looks at the viewer. She wears an elegant dress with a high collar and sleeves with slits. Her hair is pinned up under a pearl bonnet over which she wears a beret with an ostrich feather. She wears numerous linked chains around her neck and a neckband with a pendant. Her shadow is visible on the red background.

Research History / Discussion

This and a further portrait of Christiane von Eulenau created at the same time by Lucas Cranach the Younger are the earliest examples in which he employs cast shadows to acentuate the figures. D. Koepplin attributes the invention of this device to Cranach's sons, Lucas the Younger and Hans.
