The risen Christ occupies the vertical axis of the panel. The rectangular panel exhibits small semi-circular additions at the left and right edges, and a larger semi-circle above the central third. Christ stands on the open sarcophagus, enveloped in a robe, that wafts out dramatically to the right and holds the victory banner in his hands, it in turn wafts in the opposite direction. The awakening soldiers frame the sarcophagus.

The painting is fitted in an elaborate renaissance frame, which links it with the second panel, a depiction of the olive grove. In addition to the painted ornamentation in the spandrels the carved frame exhibits the coats-of-arms of both families over this central scene. The frieze beneath is decorated with two putti holding a text field. There is another larger text field beneath the scene with the olive grove.

Framing

The painting is fitted in the original aedicule-like frame. There is a frieze with a text field over which a panel depicting the Resurrection is positioned. Carved figures in the forms of an atlas (left) and a caryatide (right) flank the scene in the olive grove. At the bottom of the frame there is a larger text field.

Condition Reports

Date10.12.2003

  • wood species is unknown

  • xylophaga infestation of the spandrel fields, otherwise only occasional woodworm damage

  • insect frass on the painted side has been stained dark ( indication of a later varnish application)

  • two splits running in from the side and a split along the join

  • the paint layers are in good condition and except for isolated areas in tact, no disturbing retouches

  • some exit holes

  • typical network of cracks

  • recent chalk/lime drips

  • old, brown and cloudy varnish (probably anoil/resin varnish) with dirty streaks

  • old surface dirt dissolved with the new application of a varnish causing a streaky appearance

Treatment proposal:

With the exception of some woodworm damage and a slightly yellowed varnish the panel painting is in good condition and does not require any immediate treatment. A varnish removal is not necessary as the varnish is not blanched and the degree of yellowing is acceptable. Furthermore the optical appearance harmonises with the equally aged finish on the frame.

Treatment:

  • surface cleaning and removal of drips from the wall coating

  • the worm channels were filled employing cork filler and chalk ground, the insect frass was left

  • the fills were retouched

  • only the split join at the top was glued, filled and retouched
