Painting on wood, transferred to a new wooden support

[Weschenfelder, Exhib. Cat. Coburg 2003, 72]

In a wooded mountain landscape the saint kneels before a crucifix, which is mounted on a tree stump. He has put the cardinal's attributes, a red cloak and hat to one side so that he can beat his breast with a stone. The lion nuzzles up to him trustingly.

Research History / Discussion

There is another version in a Swiss private collection

[Heydenreich, CDA 2011]

'The popularity of the composition is proved by numerous versions of the same size, which differ only slightly, two of these owned by the Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen (WAF 187 and 189) demonstrate the manner in which the Cranach workshop reproduced a successful pictorial type on demand.'

Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brush; possibly executed in two stages

Type/Ductus:

- relatively freehand underdrawing; the carefully executed outlines suggest that they were probably transferred from a pre-existing design

- thin to somewhat broader lines

- occasional hatching-strokes in the body

Function:

- relatively binding for the painted version, lines define the main contours and describe essential details and facial features; occasional use of hatching-strokes to define volume

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made to forms during the painting process; small changes (e. g. the position of the lion’s eyes and his mouth; the hat and the robe

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder
