In this painting two distictive parties are depicted: three pairs are shown battling, each with a bearded and beardless man. In all cases the bearded man is armed with a club and stands victorious over his opponent who lies on the ground. Two of the fighting men have already been defeated. The lament of the women and children, that frame the battle scene, can be read in their gestures and facial expressions.
