Research History / Discussion

There is a black coating on the reverse of the panel and a woodcut by Cranach showing the electoral coat-of-arms, which was painted red, and has been attached to the reverse of the panel, 14.3 x 11.5 cm (sheet size); it was first used in the 'Wittenberger Heiltumsbuch' 1509 [Exhib. Cat. Basel 1974, No. 101, Fig. 89], the same as the portrait of Friedrich the Wise in Bern from 1532 [Exhib. Cat. Basel 1974, No. 190] and the painting in Berlin from the same year [Cat. Berlin 1973, No. 26]
