Surrounded by a gloriole of angels in a dark blue cloud, while looking at the devotional faithful he presents his son's suffering and self-sacrifice. The Holy Spirit has alighted on his shoulders in the shape of a dove to complete the ensemble of three in one God.

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, dark medium, brush; possibly in two stages

Type/Ductus:

- relatively economic, freehand underdrawing

- thin to somewhat broader lines; occasionally searching

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate the main contours, define forms therein and describe facial features; no representation of volume with hatching strokes

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made to forms during the painting process; small changes (e. g. in the faces and the landscape at the bottom edge)

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- Lucas Cranach the Elder or workshop (?)

Comments:

- probably transferred freehand from a pre-existing design
