The painting depicts the Old Testament heroin Judith as a lifesize full-length nude figure standing against a dark neutral background on stony ground. She wears a transparent veil that falls from her head and is wrapped around her body. In addition she a splendid band and two chains around her neck. She holds the head of Holofernes in her left hand, while in her right hand she holds the long sword with which she killed Holofernes, having entraped him to save her city.
