Results

Drawing material:

- fluid (brush)

Technique:

- Linear underdrawing with a brush indicating the outlines of shapes with little deviation in the painted version: the steps in the foreground, the Virgin’s book, the contours of the angel’s wings and on the wings of the Holy Ghost [1]

- lines that cannot readily be identified as underdrawing are visible above the foreheads of the angels - one option was possibly executed during the painting process as a hairband?, underdrawing visible in the lectern and the vase in the foreground

- decorative pattern on the table cloth under the Bible was not indicated in the underdrawing

- painting process legible in the lower area of the left wing of the angel: initially a smaller version of the wing-tip was executed compared with the later and larger painted version

  • the whole length of the panel is reinforced (right side), fixed with two dowels, the dowels are visible on the front

  • the heartwood is on the painted side of the panel

  • marks from a smoothing plane are visible on the right edge

  • three cropped dowels are visible on the left edge

  • rectangular breaks on the left and right edges of the reinforcement

  • woodworm damage (open channels)

Painted surface:

  • retouching in the bottom left corner and on the inside of the left arch

  • abrasion particularly in the top right corner

  • old, yellowed varnish
