- the back of the panel is covered with a black substance, bitumen or the like

- there are probably no joins (none visible)

- along the edges of the painting (approx. 3 mm) you can see the wood without ground and paint layers

Support:

  • the back of the panel is covered with a black substance, bitumen or the like

  • there are probably no joins (none visible)

  • there are no visible cracks but holes from old wood worm attacks in the support

  • the panel is curving backwards.

Paint Layers:

  • the painting is painted with oil paint

  • the paint layer has natural ageing cracks and there are no paintlosses or flaking

  • there are slightly discoloured retouches on the surface of the painting

  • the painting has been impregnated with wax which has filled out the holes from old wood worm attack

Varnish:

  • the varnish is rather thick, uneven and yellowed. The gloss is semi matt and uneven

Frame:

  • the frame has old, inactive wood worm attacks
