Christ as the Man of Sorrows is depicted as a seated half-length figure against a black background. His body is covered in blood and is turned to the right, whereas his head faces to the left in three-quarters profile and is crowned with thorns. Christ has raised both hands to his chest and looking directly at the viewer he presents his wounds. Below there is a gaping side-wound from which a stream of blood flows towards Christ's lap where the tools of martyrdom rest.
