Recto: The Virgin kneels with folded hands on a prayer stool and looks towards the left from where the Angel of the Annunciation approaches. His right hand is already raised in blessing and with his left hand the angel pulls aside the curtain of the baldachin where the Virgin kneels.

Recto: The Virgin kneels with folded hands on a prayer stool and looks towards the left from where the Angel of the Annunciation approaches. His right hand is already raised in blessing and with his left hand the angel pulls aside the curtain of the baldachin where the Virgin kneels. The Holy Spirit hovers over the Virgin's head in the form of a dove.

Verso: Full-length representation of St Jerome, wearing the red vestments of a cardinal and standing on a thin strip of ground against a dark background. The saint is attempting to pull a thorn out of the paw of a lion, standing on his hind-legs at the left.

Research History / Discussion

The painter of this retable was trained in Cranach‘s workshop and sourced inspiration from his collection of templates and preparatory material. He also drew on Dürer prints as a basis for his compositions. Results of a technical examination of the painting do not indicate that it was executed in the Wittenberg workshop. As Friedrich III is represented on this painting future research should concentrate on finding out more about this particular commission and attempt to establish the relationship of the artist responsible for the Mittenwald Retable (http://lucascranach.org/DE_MKM_NONE-MKM001C) with the elector of Saxony.
