The fragment with St Christine formed the right wing of an altar triptych. On the left an angel's head on a cloud can be recognized. On the right remnants of another female figure can be seen. The corner of a book and the end of an arrow suggest it may be St Vorsile standing in the background. The fragment lacks the usual attribute of St Christine - the millstone referring to her martyrdom (although it was probably depicted at her feet) - but the saint is nevertheless identified by an inscription in her hands written in gothic minuscule and hiding her name.

Underdrawing

The IRR examination revealed a minor correction of the size of the thumb. This type of shift can also be seen in other details of St Christine; however, no major changes made by the artist that would result in the correction of the composition appeared. The underdrawing is, in general, executed rather sparingly, without any hatching, and is reduced to the main outlines.

Paint Layers and Gilding

- the fragment of an angel on the reverse is from about 1600 or the beginning of the 17th century (pigment composition).

- there is an earlier layer of paint beneath with black and grey underdrawing. An x-radiograph shows a diagonally placed ornamental motif completed by lavish ornamentation. This layer of paint is not far off Cranach's painting.
