A half-length portrait of a young woman, facing left. She is wearing a black dress with a brocade border and decorative slits in the sleeves. It is finished around the neckline with a pleated transparent material over which she wears a choker and a chain. Her hair is tied together under a snood and covered by a thin veil the edge of which creates a soft line above her eyes and across her cheek.

The wood is from the same tree as that of the panel 'Christ blessing the Children', Inv. No. 1924 and 'Martin Luther' and 'Philipp Melanchthon' (private collection, Hamburg). For the latter the most recent annual ring and therefore the earliest felling date is 1532.
