Christ stands in the centre of this rectangular composition shifted slightly to the right of the central axis and surrounded by a crowd of mothers with their children. He holds one of the children in his arms and has placed his hand over another's stomach. The mothers press in on him from either side. The apostles are visible in the top left corner and their defensive stance betrays their scepticism. The panel is one of the few examples which shows the blessing against a landscape backdrop.

  • the joins have been reinforced with three battens (pine), beneath the panel has been planed down slightly (lighter)

  • saw marks along the edges of the panel

  • marks from nails employed to fix the panel in a frame

  • the panel is convexly warped

  • woodworm damage (open channels)

Painted surface:

  • retouching particularly along the joins, on the left hand of the man on the left, in the face of the lady on the left with a child in her arms, on the child holding the red dress

  • thin, matt varnish
