Underdrawing

Results

Drawing material:

- dry

Technique:

- underdrawing in a dry material with simple strokes: contours and economical use of hatching-strokes to indicate the shadows on the temples, the cheeks and the nose; drawing in long precise lines, which is essentially binding for the subsequent painted version; corrections in the neckline and the ear in the drawing and minimal deviations in the painted version; the folds of the shirt are indicated with a few strokes [1]

- further underdrawing visible in the eye sockets, simple contours to indicate the hands, and similar lines particularly on the inside of the right sleeve and the gathered cuff over the back of the hand

- the neckline is indicated by a line of irregular dashes - either a dry drawing material was rubbed off here or the design was possibly transferred employing a stencil
