Christ is shown raised up and bound to the column at the left edge of the painting, looking at the viewer. The cords around his wrists are loose and with crossed hands he presents his wounds. St John, the Virgin and two other male figures kneel in front of the

Christ is shown raised up and bound to the column at the left edge of the painting, looking at the viewer. The cords around his wrists are loose and with crossed hands he presents his wounds. St John, the Virgin and two other male figures kneel in front of the platform. One of these is identified as St Roche by a label attached to the steps. The second younger man is also a saint as is indicated by the halo; however he has not been associated with any attributes. A comparison with other compositions by Cranach suggests that it could be St Sebastian.

The perspectival lines, the contours and the main features within the forms were executed with a brush, this underdrawing was not binding for the subsequent painted version, masterly drawing technique without corrections and cross-hatching, deviations are particularly visible in the head of Christ, which was originally inclined to the right and in his left foot

  • paint loss in the top area of the joins, on the shoulder and upper arm of Christ, on the right and bottom edges of the painting

  • abrasion of the paint, particularly on the podium with the tile pattern

  • old overpaint on the marbled rear wall
