The portrait depicts the humanist Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam as a half-length figure against a blue background, facing left. Erasmus wears the typical clothes of a scholar: a black gown with a high collar and a fur lining, visible on the lapels and the sleeves, and a black hat.

TTha panel is from the same tree as planks used for the linked panels; therefore the youngest annual ring is from 1524; the earliest felling date is 152; followuing a two year seasoning period the panel could have been used from 1526.
