The left wing of the triptych depicts a half-length portrait of Friedrich the Wise in front of an expansive landscape. The landscape extends across all three panels. The elector wears a fur-trimmed black cloak, a black beret and has a grey beard. He is turned to the right, and wears a ring on the index finger of his right hand. In contrast with Johann the Steadfast on the central panel Friedrich occupies almost the entire pictorial space. There is a text block in bottom third of the painting, which serves as a sort of balustrade for the elector.
