Research History / Discussion

The subject was already illustrated in Early Christian art. By about 1500 it served as an exempel for the consequences of drunkenness and gluttony, which at the time were seen as frequently prompting sexual excesses. According to contemporary texts both Lot and his daughters (Weiberlist) participated in the morally reprehensible act.
